Going into my internship, I would say problem solving, working with DPs, and public speaking helped me a lot. During the three weeks I was at DATO, I was a part of a briefing and several staff meetings. It was hard for me to just start talking to random people I didn't know but when we were at staff meetings, I felt more comfortable with pitching ideas or just speaking up, such as giving the team an idea for the brochures and travel planner situation. Working with Weebly was different than working with their website maker but it helped me realize how to format my page and make the layout look good. I also used problem solving for when I encountered issues with my webpage or other projects. For example, when I couldn't find any other tips for tourists, I used the DATO website blogs and Google to find more tips and continue making my page. After my internship, I developed a stronger sense of working independently and being more responsible with managing my work. With my project, I didn't wait until the last day to work on it. I made sure that I followed a plan made by my mentors and I so my final project looked good and was something I was proud to present. I worked more independently on my project versus more collaboratively. I collaborated with my mentors to refine my page and to see what should be added.
Shortcomings or Challenges
During my last week of my internship, I was telling my stepmom the pros and cons of working at DATO and how I was really quiet the past couple of weeks and like I didn't feel like I was asking a lot of questions. I also talked to her about feeling like I wasn't doing too much and she said, "are you trying to make me believe it or you?" I realized I was just making excuses for why I wasn't asking a lot of questions and why I was so quiet. I tried saying it was because I was in a corner or because my project didn't require me talking constantly. I figured that because I only had a couple more days left and my project was finished, that I should try to ask more questions and do more interacting with the staff. Even though I didn't get to do a lot of interacting and ask as many questions as I felt I should've, I still felt like I made more progress with it than I did the second week.
My Importance at DATO
I felt like I was an important part of the team at DATO because I was helping my mentors during a time that they had a lot on their plate with a briefing, beverage campaign and party, new ad options at the office, and videos coming up. I think that me doing some of the little things helped out a lot and creating a page that they wanted to make but never had the time to. I think that DATO should allow more high school interns because we have a lot of experience with making websites and videos which help with digital marketing and we want to learn more. We have a more open mind of what we want to do because this helps us decide what we want to do in college.
This internship has made me realize I want to interact with more people versus doing my own thing on a computer. I want to have more of a leadership role and want to focus more on the advertising and hands on creative aspect that comes with it. I still want to explore my options but am still considering marketing, just another branch of it.
