What is socialization and how does it affect your life and our society?
Socialization is the norms and customs of our families and society. It is the way we have all been taught to act around certain people. Socialization can be negative or positive depending on what people have to you and the norms you know. We all get affected by society even if we don’t know it. All the negative and positive things we’ve been told, called, or said have an impact on us and the people around us. Socialization affects society by creating norms and customs that we have to have around society.
Describe the project as if someone who's never been to Animas wants to know what you did. Explain the essay and explain how your mask represents your essay.
The project is about society and how we are affected by society even as a baby. We were trying to show how it has affected us negatively and positively. For example, if your a girl and you have always been told that you aren’t as strong as boys are then that is negative socialization. Positive socialization is when you are told to respect your elders. We watched movies and videos and read articles and stories that showed socialization and how it had an impact on people. Then we began to write our essays on how we have been affected by socialization because of our social identities. We made masks to also represents our roles in society. Our masks also symbolized the stereotypes that we’ve been given.
Describe the process we went through as a class in writing our essays. What important ideas and techniques did you learn?
We started writing our essays out in TEA form. You start with a topic sentence, add evidence sentences and a couple of analysis sentences for each evidence sentence. We repeated this process for all our paragraphs. Then when we were done with our TEA format we had peer reviews and started on our first draft. I learned that in order to have a great essay you should do each paragraph in TEA format.
Describe what you are proud of so far in your first year at Animas as a student and a person, and what you are looking to improve upon. This can be something inside or outside of Humanities class.
I am proud of the mask project and how I have learned so much during the short time I’ve been here. I am able to speak in front of people better now and not be really nervous. I love the support we get during these projects and all the peer reviews we do to perfect these projects.
